Surf Shop History
My partner and I saw a real estate opportunity and both love surfing so we decided to open up Red Dog surf shop in 1989. Red Dog is still running strong today, being one of the most core shops in the New Smyrna area.

More About Red Dog
An interview with Red Dog
When did you start your business?
1989
Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?
Yes- We get all of the Orlando traffic and the condo business nearby as well. Plus we are located close to the beach.
Who is your average buyer?
Male- 15-40 years old.
If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?
Yes most definitely.
What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?
“Do you have to melt the wax to put it on the surfboard?”
Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?
Yes- everybody that works here brings their dog in whenever they want.
What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?
Worn, stinky shoes. They got really mad when I said we cannot accept these back as a return.
Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?
Yes we have a surf team and support our local crew.
What is your most annoying grom story?
One time we had to literally pick a kid up and throw him out of the shop and lock the door. He finally doesn’t come back anymore.
Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?
Yes- Patrick Swayze.
Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?
Yes that has happened before.
How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?
We surf everyday or at least when there’s waves.
Who is your favorite surfer and why?
Kelly Slater.
Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?
Yes we’ve had that happen before.
Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.
Yes most definitely. One kid came in super wasted and begged me for a discount. I wouldn’t give him one so he just left.
Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?
One time these guys stole my board from the side of the shop. I found them parked down on the beach with my board in the car. I busted out their window and got my board back as well as one of their boards. Our shoplifting policy is death by hanging.
And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?
On Memorial Day weekend (One of the busiest shop days all year) we got so wasted we had to close the shop down.
