More About Ocean Beach Surf & Skate

An interview with Ocean Beach Surf & Skate

When did you start your business?

1990

Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?

Yes because we’re located in the heart of Ocean Beach, 2 blocks away from the beach.

Who is your average buyer?

Anybody from surf groms to geezers.

If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?

Yes absolutely. A sale is a sale.

What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?

(O.B. Surf Shop is located with an ocean view)- People have come in and asked- “Which way is the beach?”

Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?

The local (O.B. trolls) vagabonds that sleep under our skate ramps at night.

What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?

The customer purchased a surfboard and they went and used it and dinged it really bad. The same day they purchased it they came back and tried to return it after they dinged it.

Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?

Yes we have a surf & skate team. We also sponsor and contribute to local high schools surf & skate teams.

What is your most annoying grom story?

When the groms saran wrap each other to things (**for example a sector 9 skateboard) and push each other down the street and all over the place for long periods of time. They also wax each other’s car windows etc.

Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?

Nope. No celebs.

Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?

Lets just say adding that line is always a bonus.

How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?

It’s about cut in half these days.

Who is your favorite surfer and why?

The Mighty Joe Diamond & Dan House.

Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?

Nope. Unfortunately not.

Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.

Yes absolutely. We are located right up the street from a bunch of bars and people start early here.

Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?

When somebody tried to run out of the shop with a Sector 9 longboard and they got chased down by an employee. Run and we’ll chase you down and catch you***

And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?

It’s a toss up between the time a guy came in and unknowingly sold us a Lightning Bolt board shaped by Reno or when a local troll lady came in and asked if she could buy “the internet.”
