Surf Shop History

My dad (Ron Heavyside) is originally from Canada, but he lived in California. He came here with his parents and moved to Briny Breezes right by where Nomad is located. His dad started a TV repair store. In 1968 his dad gave him a 75 foot little hole in the wall shop, connected to the TV repair store that had maybe 8 boards and 10 pairs of trunks. In the middle 70s my dad took over the TV repair store, which is still part of the Nomad shop today. He made the store into a shop that sold surfboards (his pin tail specials etc etc). At this point he was known for his artwork and pintails (sting fishes, retro boards etc). The connecting building was an old bar called “Dantes Den.” My dad eventually bought that side of the building and transformed “Dante’s Den” into an expanded version of the original shop. By following my dad’s footsteps the Nomad family continues to shape boards in the shaping bays in the shop and we continue to hook up the local crew with good board deals etc.

More About Nomad Surf Shop

An interview with Nomad Surf Shop

When did you start your business?

1968

Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?

Yes for sure because we’re located right on the A1A road and our location has been the same for years.

Who is your average buyer?

Basically everybody from guys with American Express Black Cards to guys that have come here since the shop first opened.

If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?

I guess it just depends on how the guy comes off

What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?

This one we get all of the time- “Do you wax the bottom of the board?”

Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?

Bob & Garin

What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?

When a guy tries to return a board that is broken in two and says that the board was defective even tho you can tell he got pitched and nosed dived right into the sandbar.

Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?

Yes we have a surf team as well as we stoke all of the local crue.

What is your most annoying grom story?

When the groms tell you it was going off around the corner saying it was overhead and barreling when we surfed right up from where they were talking about and it wasn’t at all.

Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?

Rod Stewart and Rachel Hunter.

Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?

Sure it’s happened more than once.

How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?

We work when it’s flat and we surf when there’s surf.

Who is your favorite surfer and why?

Andy Irons – cuz he’s an all around good surfer and he knows how to blow people off and stick to his own attitude.

Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?

I wouldn’t say completely naked, but darn close. Girls passed out and stuff all wasted.

Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.

Yes. Every day. I’ve had to pay the guys that come in totally wasted to leave.

Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?

A girl got caught but her friend made it outside. One of our employees ran out to try and grab her and she tried to run him over. We usually get the police involved, but we usually don’t press charges unless it is something way outta hand.

And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?

The old ding repair guy tried to epoxy his tooth back in saying that “this is what dentists do,” but it didn’t quite work.
