Surf Shop History
Pete Lopez dreamed of owning a surf shop for 40 Years. His dream was finally fulfilled in July, 2006 when he opened Nekton with his professional surfer son, Corey. Nekton is a testament to Pete’s love of catching a wave and the success Corey and the Lopez’s oldest son Shea, have had on the international professional surfing tour. “This shop is the accumulation of a lot of hard years of work,” says Lopez. “We’ve been able to keep our family together through a passion we all have for surfing.”

More About Nekton Surf Shop
An interview with Nekton Surf Shop
When did you start your business?
1694. First shop ever. Founded by the Seminole Indians.
Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?
Who cares- we live in the “Irb.”
Who is your average buyer?
Our average customer is actually both boys and girls of all ages. We also have a lot of families come in as well.
If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?
We love everybody. One love.
What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?
“Do you guys sell surfboards?” (the shop is filled with boards all over it).
Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?
Yes we have a mascot- “Ollie” the Beagle.
What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?
A dozen eggs.
Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?
Yes we have a surf/skate & skim team.
What is your most annoying grom story?
Every time they walk thru the door.
Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?
Barrack Obama bought a tailpad from us once. We’ve also had a Mike Ditka look-a-like.
Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?
Yes- everyday.
How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?
We surf whenever we get a chance cuz there’s some long dry spells here.
Who is your favorite surfer and why?
Corey & Shea Lopez.
Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?
No customers. Employees tho.
Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.
Yes all of the time. Our shop is located right next to a bar.
Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?
Shoplifting isn’t a problem because we use plastic explosive security tactics.
And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?
That one shoplifter that exploded.
