Surf Shop History
In 1961, Mike Mann caught his first wave on a rented surfboard in Miami Beach. From that moment on he had no doubt what he wanted to do with his life. It was a great place to be from, but waves were scarce. He knew he had to leave Miami or face the prospect of becoming a stable, respectable citizen who went to work every day. It was happening to some of his friends, so he left Miami and never looked back.

More About Longboard House
An interview with Longboard House
When did you start your business?
1990
Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business success?
Corner of A1A and 1-92 across from the beach and Indialantic, Boardwalk . Definitely!
Who is your average buyer?
We cater to all levels of surfers, from entry level groms to collectors wanting to purchase that rare Phil Edwards Balsa Hobie. While they are frothing over the surfboards the rest of the family can shop for apparel, accessories or a number of other beach related life style products. We have stuff for infants and you can’t forget Grandma!
If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?
We treat all customer’s with respect. We want to earn a customer’s business.
What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?
Will you take these Peruvian coins on trade for a surfboard?
Do you have a mascot?
Random dogs and groms belonging to many employees of LBH.
What is the craziest return?
Too gross to repeat!!!
Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team.
We support all local surfers. We don’t have a surf team but we offer discounts to all local high school surf teams.
What is your most annoying grom story?
If it weren’t for groms, surfing wouldn’t be the same. Where do we start ?
Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?
Yes, Jimmy Buffet flew in on a sea plane, landing in the river near by, and picked up a couple of longboards. Hail Mary himself, Doug Flutie ( Melbourne Beach native ) bought a board for he and his daughter. Amongst others.
Have you ever pulled a hot chick solely due to the fact that you manage a surf shop?
They try all the time, but I tell them I’m happily married!
How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you managed a surf shop?
I would say 2 – 3 times per decent swell, compared to every day per decent swell.
Who is your favorite surfer and why ?
Slatz / K9 – 1st person I ever surfed with behind Islander Hut in Cocoa Beach, (1977), went to school with him, and he’s the friggin 9X , eventually 10X world champ! Not only that, he re-defined what it is to be a surfer!
Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?
No, but we do have several male customers who shop for bikini’s on a regular basis.
Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) , and tried to make a purchase?
You name it, they have been on it, and yes they have tried to make purchases. Too many times to mention.
Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?
Brick through plate glass window, they got a Joel Tudor single fin, and an Aipa Stinger. Of course the employee who sells boards for cash out the back door is always refreshing. That has happened also. We have a “No” shoplifting policy.
Tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember.
2004 Hurricanes (3 in a row ). Ripped off our roof. We were closed for almost 6 months. There were a bunch of damaged boards, and pretty much all of the clothing was destroyed.. There was a silver lining. Although a very painful process, it was a complete remodel. We ended up expanding the size of the board room, and we came back bigger and better than ever!
