Surf Shop History

Owner, Mark Anastas had always dreamed of someday opening a surf shop in Southern Maine. After working in a shop in Palm Beach Florida Mark came home to make his dream a reality. He just needed to add “Liquid”. Born in the spring of 1996 Liquid Dreams opened it’s doors in Ogunquit, Maine and quickly became Maine’s largest surf shop. Mark’s goal was to provide local surfers and visitors the best surfing gear at the best prices with a friendly attitude. The staff at Liquid Dreams is made up of local surfers that pride themselves on having the most knowledge of surfing and surfing equipment on the Maine coast. Bottom line, we love surfing, it’s just what we do.

More About Liquid Dreams

An interview with Liquid Dreams

When did you start your business?

Close to 20 years ago.

Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?

Yes both of our shops are located in the central part of South Maine. One right on the beach and the other one really close to the beach.

Who is your average buyer?

Our average buyer is everyone from tourists to the local surf crew. All ages and both genders.

If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?

Yes absolutely. We treat everybody equally here.

What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?

“Does a wetsuit keep you warm?”

Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?

Yes we consider some of the people employed here as mascots.

What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?

A used wetsuit that was all sandy.

Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?

Yes we have a surf team and we support our local surf community.

What is your most annoying grom story?

Although the groms can be annoying at times we love all of them.

Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?

I’ll put it this way- we get quite a few rather attractive Canadian girls coming through here during certain times of the year.

How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?

We surf about the same actually. Whenever there’s waves we’re on it.

Who is your favorite surfer and why?

Anybody who’s locked into a good tube because getting tubed is where it’s at.

Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?

No, but darn close. We’ve had quite a few friendly girls that are open to showing skin come thru here.

Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.

Yes. An infinite number of times. We haven’t really had any issues with the people that come in drunk and make a purchase. Usually the people that are buzzed or drunk tend to spend more money than the average customer so it’s all good.

Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?

I can’t really think of any memorable shoplifting stories. We have had very few shoplifters over the years. Everybody is pretty cool when they come into the shop. Our shoplifting policy would be (if they’re underage) to contact their parents and if they’re “of age” to get the item back they stole. If it was some sort of big shoplifting situation we would definitely get the police involved.

And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?

Looking out at Long Beach from our shop in York and seeing it firing with a foot of snow on the ground and charging through the foot of snow to score perfect empty tubes.
