Surf Shop History

We started Avon surf shop in 2005. My husband is a commercial fisherman. We were either gonna buy a huge commercial boat or start a surf shop since we both love surfing. We have both been surfing since we were really young. I also love fashion and design my own things that we sell in the shop. A lot of places around here close during the off season. We’re open all year and one of us is always here to provide good customer service. We’re both passionate about what we do and supporting our local surf community and everybody else who loves the surfing lifestyle.

More About Avon Surf Shop

An interview with Avon Surf Shop

When did you start your business?

2005

Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?

Yes absolutely. Because we’re located in the heart of Avon on the island, which is about 30 miles long. We have the only supermarket on the island, movie theatre etc so everybody comes here.

Who is your average buyer?

Our average buyer is probably tourist girls.

If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?

Yes absolutely. We treat everybody equally here.

What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?

“Does the zipper of the wetsuit go in the front when you put it on or in the back?”

Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?

Just 2 crazy kids. A 5 year old and an 8 year old.

What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?

A pair of sandy booties. They wanted their money back.

Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?

We help out the local surfers and skaters.

What is your most annoying grom story?

Some kids stole a banner off of our porch and hat and sent an email to me of a picture of both bragging that they stole it.

Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?

Jim Mangold (The writer and director of the movie “Walk the Line,” “Girl Interupted,” and “3:10 to Yuma”).

Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?

Nope I’m married.

How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?

My husband just as much actually. If there’s waves we’re closed. We put a gone surfing sign on the door.

Who is your favorite surfer and why?

Frieda Zamba and my dad. My dad is 60 and he still surfs every day.

Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?

Nobody naked yet.

Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.

My husband was actually working last nite and this drunk couple from Chicago came in and the wife (with a large breast enhancement) had one of her areola’s sticking out and she didn’t even care. They made a purchase as well.

Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?

My most memorable experience is when a kid came in and stole a skateboard out of the front window and chased him out of the store. I grabbed the board out of his hands while he was trying to get into his friend’s car. I had a store full of people at the time and had to go back in and call the cops. Considering the fact that this island only has one road both off and on it they got caught immediately. Our shoplifting policy is we prosecute.

And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?

No real crazy shop stories. It’s pretty mellow on the island actually.
